Horace Greeley I.S. 10 Q Weekly Review (5/15/26)

Hi everyone! Over the course of seven tutoring sessions at I.S. 235, our team worked with 6th–8th grade students to prepare for the New York State Math exams. Rather than reviewing material students already knew, we structured each session around identifying and correcting mistakes: students completed practice sets from previous state exams before we arrived, and we used their results to target the specific concepts they were struggling with. This let us focus our limited time on genuine gaps rather than repetition. Through this process, students strengthened their understanding of several core algebra topics, including angle relationships formed by a transversal, graphing functions, and manipulating systems of equations.

One unexpected challenge was a language barrier - several students were primarily fluent in Spanish, and only one of our volunteers spoke fluent conversational Spanish. The school's assistant principal helped translate at times, and our Spanish-speaking volunteer supported students individually outside the main sessions.

Beyond the tutoring itself, our team was invited to the school's multicultural night celebration, which was a great chance to connect with the community outside the classroom. We truly enjoyed working with these students this year, and we're looking forward to continuing next year as well.
