Our New Chapter at Anaheim YMCA!

This upcoming program, Smart Systems, Fair Choices, will be a hands-on STEM enrichment curriculum for students in grades 4-6, designed to make complex ideas like algorithms, AI decision-making, and ethics approachable and engaging. Rather than learning about AI in abstract terms, students will participate in interactive activities where they break down how decision systems work, explore how design choices can lead to unfair outcomes, and redesign those systems to be more fair, transparent, and responsible.This program emphasizes learning by doing. Students will act as “AI systems,” build simple algorithms, intentionally test systems that fail ethically, and collaborate to improve them. Through these activities, students gain both technical understanding and critical thinking skills, while also learning that technology is created by people, and that those creators have a responsibility to consider how their designs affect others.We’re excited to begin this work and hope to continue expanding our outreach to additional schools and community organizations.
