Intro to Algebra is a free online Algebra 1 course that teaches students to think with variables. It turns algebra into a set of puzzles, where you solve for x, graph linear equations, and simplify complex expressions with style.
It starts with a short pre-algebra review, then covers expressions, polynomials, linear equations and their graphs, systems of equations, functions, and factoring quadratics. Each topic lists the steps to follow, works through an example, and gives practice problems with an answer key. You'll always know how to approach a problem and can check your work right away.
The course is for students in grades 7 through 9 who are starting Algebra 1, and for older students who want a clear refresher. You should be comfortable with fractions, negative numbers, and simple one-step equations. If not, begin with Pre-Algebra.
Budget about 20 hours: roughly three hours per unit including practice problems. The course works well alongside a school Algebra 1 class or as summer preparation.
Yes. Intro to Algebra is completely free, with no fees, subscriptions, or account required. STEM for Others is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and every course in our curriculum library is free for students, families, and teachers.
It covers the core Algebra 1 topics most schools teach, including linear equations, graphing, systems, polynomials, functions, and factoring quadratics. Use it to learn ahead, catch up, or review before a test.
