Hi everyone! In this workshop, students designed functional cardboard hand models using rubber bands and string to mimic real movement, cutting and shaping their cardboard with tape and scissors. One of our volunteers opened by showing a finished model she'd built ahead of time, which many students doubted they could match. Through this activity, students explored fundamental principles of biomedical engineering by recreating the mechanisms of tendons and joints within the human body. We hit a couple of obstacles along the way: cutting the cardboard with scissors proved tricky for many students, so volunteers stepped in to cut the cardboard, and the tape wasn't holding the string notches in place, so we began taping around the cardboard instead of just one side. By the end, students were shocked by how close their final models came to the example!
