About this free Chemical Reactions course

Chemical Reactions is a free, hands-on introduction to chemistry for upper elementary and middle school students. From bubbling experiments to surprising transformations, students dive into how substances change and interact, including the structure of atoms, the conservation of mass, the types of chemical reactions, and the role of energy in chemical processes.

Through hands-on labs and real-world investigations, students mix, measure, and observe, balance equations, and model molecules, learning to think like chemists. STEM for Others volunteers have taught this curriculum in community settings, including family housing programs, and it's designed to work anywhere with simple materials.

Who this course is for

The lessons are designed for students in grades 5 through 8 and require no chemistry background. They're a natural fit for science classes, clubs, libraries, and family science nights. Adult supervision is recommended during experiments.

Course outline

  • Atoms and molecules. What matter is made of and how atoms combine into molecules.
  • How substances change. Signs that a new substance has formed, such as gas, color change, temperature change, or a precipitate.
  • Conservation of mass. Why atoms rearrange but are never created or destroyed.
  • Types of chemical reactions. Synthesis, decomposition, single and double replacement, and combustion.
  • Energy in reactions. Exothermic and endothermic reactions and how energy is released or absorbed.
  • Hands-on labs. Safe experiments to observe, measure, and explain reactions.

What you'll learn

  • Distinguish physical changes from chemical changes
  • Explain the law of conservation of mass
  • Identify common types of chemical reactions
  • Describe exothermic and endothermic reactions
  • Make careful observations and record results like a chemist

How long it takes

Plan on about 6 hours: each lesson and its lab fits into a single 45- to 60-minute class period.

Frequently asked questions about Chemical Reactions

Is Chemical Reactions really free?

Yes. Chemical Reactions is completely free, with no fees, subscriptions, or account required. STEM for Others is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and every course in our curriculum library is free for students, families, and teachers.

Why learn chemistry through experiments?

Seeing a reaction happen, whether it's bubbling, changing color, or getting warm, makes abstract ideas like atoms and energy concrete. Students remember what they observe, and learning to record careful observations is the first step toward thinking like a scientist.

Are the experiments safe for kids?

Yes. The labs use common, low-risk materials, and they're designed to be run with adult supervision and basic safety practices like wearing goggles and never tasting materials.

How do I start the course?

Click Begin Course at the top of this page to open the lesson slides, then gather the materials for each lab before you start. Adult supervision is recommended for hands-on experiments.

Do I get a certificate?

The self-paced Chemical Reactions materials don't include an official certificate. If you're taking the course through a STEM for Others chapter program, ask your chapter leader about recognizing your completion.

Can teachers and clubs use this curriculum?

Yes. Teachers, homeschool families, libraries, and after-school clubs are welcome to use the Chemical Reactions materials with their students at no cost. STEM for Others volunteers also teach our curriculum in partner schools and libraries. You can find a chapter near you or start one at your school.
