Hello Coyotes! Yesterday, on Wednesday October 21, we had our first meeting of the year! We have a brand-new cohort this year of around 12 students total, more than what we had last year, and 6 showed up to today's meeting! It was a really good first session in that everyone was focused, and we were able to get through more than what we originally thought we would get through! In yesterday's meeting, we covered the very basics of Python coding, something all the students were new to. We introduced what was new to students about Python, why it is important to learn for STEM careers, and its significance in the advancement of technology in our modern society, as well as the learning curve that goes along with it. Students got to learn about the very first thing when it comes to Python: print statements! Students got a chance to experiment with printing their own sentences through an online Python compiler, and at the end of class, we played a game called 'Output or Error' where we typed in a print command in Python, and using all the syntax rules they learned, the students had to figure out if the code worked or if there was an error. We also introduced comments to the students to help them learn about how to annotate their code without actually affecting its performance. Overall, it was a very fun start to the year. I am looking forward to seeing more people next week, and go Coyotes!
